History

Finanstilsynet (The Danish FSA) was established in its present form on 1 January 1988 when the Supervisory Authority for Banks and Savings Banks and the Insurance Supervisory Authority were merged.

In January 1990, the Supervisory Authority for Mortgage Credit Institutions was transferred to the Supervisory Authority from the Danish Housing Agency. An aggregate supervisory authority for the entire financial sector was now a reality.

Political responsibility for the mortgage credit area remained under the Minister for Housing until 1994 when it was transferred to the Minister for Economic Affairs.

Political responsibility for the Supervisory Authority was under the Minister for Business and Industry until the end of 1996 when the government decided to transfer it to the Minister for Economic Affairs. Thus, the Minister for Economic Affairs was responsible for the entire financial sector.

In November 2001 the Ministry of Economic Affairs merged with the Ministry of Business and Industry. Since then the Minister of Economic and Business Affairs has been responsible for Finanstilsynet.
